Broward County Community Development Corporation, Inc. d/b/a Broward Housing Solutionsî (BHSî), is a 501(c)3 non-profit, Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), that was established in 1993 after a task force that included representatives from the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) identified the critical need of affordable housing services for the low income residents in Broward County struggling with mental illnesses. Since our inception, BHSî remains dedicated to its mission of providing quality housing opportunities to meet the needs of lower income or homeless people with disabilities who also have mental illness.
There are over 27,000 people diagnosed with a form of severe persistent mental illness (SPMI) residing in Broward County, Florida. Regrettably, many citizens struggling to maintain their mental health face a host of challenges when getting their mental illness under control and maintaining a home on their own. At BHSî, we have made it our goal to help house as many low-income/homeless individuals, and their families, as possible through our many housing programs.
Via our housing programs, BHSî collaborates with mental health service providers within Broward County to maintain case management services. These mental health support services enable our residents to move towards the road of recovery and wellness while residing safely and permanently within our affordable housing programs.
The clients we serve, people with mental illness, often live off of meager Social Security benefits that certainly do not cover the cost of safe and affordable housing. For this reason BHSî charges its residents 30% of their gross monthly income as rent, while providing rental subsidies to cover the difference in rent.
Through this initiative, BHSî is currently serving 323 clients within 207rental units which are scattered throughout Broward County. These residents find themselves living with roommates or their families in beautiful 1, 2, or 3 bedroom homes. These affordable rental units are easily accessible to medical, transportation, shopping, employment opportunities, and mental health services.
In conclusion, it is a âÂÂwin-winâÂÂ. Mental health consumers win. The community wins.
